Project

Karangahake Gorge house

Project Description
The Karangahake Gorge House is a three-bedroom private residence set in one of the North Island's most dramatic landscapes, and one of Studio One's most complete demonstrations of the integrated model. The practice delivered the full scope: architecture, structural engineering, and civil design, all under one roof.
The site offered no services and difficult access, the kind of constraints that either compromise a design or sharpen it. Here they sharpened it. Modular delivery turned the site's biggest problem into the project's logic: the home was built away from the gorge and brought to it, with every decision, from siting and structure through to servicing a home that had to sustain itself, resolved by one team working to one picture. The result is a house that belongs to its landscape, designed with the flair the setting deserves and the practicality the setting demands. It is Built x Design at its most literal.
